3 inducted into Hall of Honor

The Flyer Alumni Association Hall of Honor has increased by three members with the induction of Pete Terracina, Cary Camp and Mike Kantrow. The three new members were inducted on Oct. 28 during ceremonies at halftime of the Loyola-Lakeside game at Messmer Stadium. The criteria for Hall of Honor are based on service to school, religion and community and selection is done by the Alumni Association and previous Hall of Honor inductees. All three of this year’s inductees have had children graduate from Jesuit/Loyola. With this year’s class, the Hall of Honor now has 50 members.

Pete Terracina (center) is a member of the Class of 1950. As a student at St. John’s, he was a three-year letterman in football, sang in the school choir and was chosen to represent the school at Boys State. He has served as a soloist in the Diocesan choir during the 19 years of its existence and has been a tenor soloist in other religious and theatre groups. He has been a board member for the Alumni Association and presented Loyola with a musical setting for a fight song and an alma mater. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Shreveport Opera for six years.

Cary Camp
(left) is a member of the Class of 1978 and has served as vice-president of the school’s Board of Trustees and on the Board of Governors. He has worked tirelessly on the school’s behalf and was a driving force behind the construction of not just Messmer Stadium, but all phases of the Loyola Athletic Complex. He has spearheaded fund-raising, construction, maintenance and landscaping at the entire athletic complex. It was through a technology grant from Cary and his wife Diane that Loyola was able begin upgrading all of its computer capabilities. As a student, he was a member of the 1976 state championship football team. He is also a board member with the Shreveport chapter of the LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation.

Mike Kantrow (right) has been a supporter of Loyola College Prep for more than 20 years. He and his wife Jill have had four children graduate from Loyola and Mr. Kantrow has served as past vice president and member of the school’s Board of Trustees. His many civic activities include involvement with the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, the Caddo Council on Aging, the Northwest Louisiana Volunteers America, SciPort Discovery Center, the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and the YMCA.

New Orleans alumni: Come support the Flyers!

The Loyola Flyers have qualified for their 15th straight playoff appearance -- in amazing fashion, by the way -- and will open the Class 2A playoffs Friday night against John Curtis.

For all of those alumni and friends in the area, here's your chance to come out and catch some Flyer football as Loyola makes its first appearance in the New Orleans Metro area since the 1994 state championship game.

The Flyers and Patriots will play at 7 p.m. at Muss Bertolino Stadium in Kenner (600 W. Esplanade).

With a 2-7 overall record, the Flyers made the playoffs as the final entry into the Class 2A playoffs because of their amazing strength of schedule. Eight of Loyola's nine opponents made the playoffs. But it took a last-second win over North Caddo in the final regular season game for the Flyers to be in position to qualify.

Despite having only eight seniors and four juniors, the Flyers beat Lakeside and North Caddo in the final two games to reach the playoffs. Loyola does have one player -- sophomore Chris Cimo -- who came to Loyola after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

There are seven players on the team who are sons of alumni -- senior Will Haynie (Bill '74), juniors Caleb Campbell (Curt '73) and Matthew Marshall (John '77), sophomores Aubry Carmody (Art '74) and Mark Earnest (Bob '76) and freshmen Tucker Ruben (James '79) and Patrick Harrington (Pat '79).

At one point, Loyola was home to 135 displaced students from as many as 20 different schools.
About 60 of those students remain at Loyola. We expect many to stay for the entire school year.

It is through your support that we were able to make our school available to these students.
It has been a tremendous experience for everyone involved.
Thank you for your generosity!

Next "Lunch with Loyola" on Nov. 16

The next "Lunch with Loyola" will be held Wednesday, Nov. 16 at Cambria Bistro & Bakery in Shreveport on Ashley Ridge Blvd. (behind Outback Steakhouse). The event begins at noon.

The cost is $12 and the price is all inclusive (beverage, tax & tip). The main purpose of the event is simply to get local alumni and friends of the school together.
