Flyer alumni enjoying athletic success

BILLY THOMAS '94 (left) is playing for the Washington Wizards after being picked up during the middle of the season and signed to a contract. He recently scored a career-high 14 points in a game against Sacramento on March 28. Thomas, who played for the New Jersey Nets last year, has played in all of the Wizards' last 11 games. Washington is expected to make the playoffs this season.

JON ALSTON '001 (right) is expected to be chosen the NFL draft later this month. After completing an outstanding career at Stanford, Alston has been projected as high as a third-round pick as an outside linebacker. Almost every draft ranking has Alston listed as one of the top 10 outside linebacker prospects. Alston is 6-foot-1 and 223 pounds and one draft service said "there might not be a more explosive linebacker in the draft." There is also some discussion of possibly moving to safety.

ROBERT FLANAGAN '004 has become one of the top pitchers in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference as the ace pitcher for Rhodes College. Flanagan is 8-2 with a 3.19 ERA for the Lynx, who are 23-11. He leads the conference in wins and strikeouts and was chosen as the SCAC "Player of the Week in March. Flanagan will pitch in a Canadian summer league for pro prospects this year.

Two Flyer basketball players -- JOHN ANTHONY ANGLIN '005 and J.J. MARSHALL '004 -- were members of teams that participated in NCAA post-season tournaments. Anglin played for Northwestern State, which shocked Iowa in the first round of the tournament before losing to West Virginia. Anglin played in the final minute of the second round game in Auburn Hills, Mich. Marshall played for Louisiana Tech, which tied for second in the Western Athletic Conference and played in the National Invitation Tournament against Clemson. Also, when the LSU Tigers cut down the nets in Jacksonville following their win over Texas to advance to the Final Four, the Tiger players invited longtime LSU Associate Sports Information Director KENT LOWE '75 to climb the ladder and cut a stand of the net, an honor usually reserved for only players and coaches.

CANDY VALLO '004 was the third-leading scorer (12.6 points per game) for East Texas Baptist University, which was 18-9 overall. She was named as an honorable mention on the All-American Southwest Conference team.

BRYAN MOSS '003 is batting .333 with one home run for ETBU's baseball team. The Tigers are currently 22-11.
