Special ceremony highlights
Friday's home opener

You won’t want to miss the pre-game ceremonies Friday night at Messmer Stadium. As part of National POW-MIA Day, there will be a special fly-over by two A-10s from Barksdale AFB -- piloted by Loyola parents Lt. Col. Brady Glick and Lt. Col. J.R. Russell.

But there’s even more of a reason to get to the game early. There will be a Tailgate Party starting at 5:30 p.m. with Chefs Lenny Raymond and Tony Pagni serving up their special jambalaya (and hot dogs). Food is FREE and soft drinks are $2.

At 7 p.m., the Flyers play their first home game of the season as they meet St. Frederick in the annual battle for the Bishop’s Cup. This is the first of four straight home games for the Flyers:

SEPT. 22 vs. Many        SEPT. 29 vs. BTW (Homecoming)      OCT. 6 vs. Parkway

Hope to see you at a game!

Holland gives presentation about Internet sites

Hugo Holland '81, assistant Caddo Parish District Attorney, spoke to the Loyola student body on Aug. 25 about the dangers of internet websites. Holland, who works with the sex crimes division in the DA's office, spoke to our students about the perils of internet use, especially in the area of self-disclosure such as MySpace, Facebook, and similar sites aimed specifically at the young user. He shared a visual presentation that offered a very frank, and perhaps shocking, look at some of the content of these sites.

Principal Frank Israel, in a message to Loyola parents after Holland's presentation, wrote: "I implore you to discuss this matter with your Flyer today. Find out if they have such a personal site. Look at it with them. Here’s the hard part—parents need to look at the sites the way a person with evil intent might. It’s cute that a sophomore girl lists her work days at the mall and her membership in a church youth group on her site until the wrong man sees it. It requires that we view these sites through more jaded part of our minds than we are accustomed to. I know, it’s awful; but we must protect our kids from harm as best we can."

Loyola holds Sept. 11 memorial prayer service

The student body and faculty held a prayer service in front of the school for the victims as part of the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy.

There was a gospel reading and a special prayer, followed by senior Katherine Jaynes playing "God Bless America".

The student body concluded the ceremony by saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

Flyer Field House nearing completion

The Flyer Field House is in its final stages of construction and will be used for the first time during Friday's game against St. Frederick.

Work on about 75 percent -- the portion of the building needed for home and visiting football teams -- has been completed, but construction will continue to "finish out" the building. The building (almost 10,000 square feet) has a brick entrance and is located just to the north of the home bleachers Messmer Stadium.

With four locker rooms for boys and girls teams, the facility will feature a 2,500-square foot weight room for all Loyola athletes. The Flyer Field House building has been constructed entirely through donations of alumni, parents and friends.

“The Field House is important for a number of reasons,” said Athletic Director John LeBlanc said. “First of all, we’ve needed a first-class facility to go with what has been built at our Athletic Complex. Next, we’ve been in need of a weight room for all of our male and female athletes that will allow them to be as good as they can be. But most of all, since it will service so many of our students and athletes, it will be a great source of pride for all of Loyola Athletics.”

The Field House is equipped with player lockers unlike any other you will find in high school athletics. By buying a gold nameplate to be put in these lockers, you can participate in the Flyer Field House project. Nameplates can be used as a memorial, a dedication or any form of recognition you choose.

The cost to have a nameplate placed in a locker is $1,500. For more information about this or any part of the fund-raising effort for the Flyer Field House, contact John LeBlanc at (318) 226-6297 or email alumni@loyolaprep.org

Ely completes triathlon

Wes Ely '81 recently completed a triathlon in Couer D'Alene, Idaho, and shares his experience with Flyer alumni. "The entire day is a series of problems solving events and basically a long eating contest.  I figure that some of our alums might enjoy thinking through how the Jesuit/Loyola experience truly prepares us for life.  I can honestly say that without Jesuit/Loyola, I doubt that I’d have ever had the story below to write about.  Our high school provided the religious base of faith that eventually called me to do this…and for that I am so very thankful."
