Flyers meet Many tonight; Homecoming is next week

The Loyola Flyers will take on Many tonight at 7 p.m. at Messmer Stadium in the second game of a four-game homestand. Loyola is still looking for its first win after falling to St. Frederick last week 24-14. The Flyers have led in two of the three games and were a two-point conversion in the final seconds away from sending the other game into overtime.

Next week, Loyola will take on Booker T. Washington as part of Homecoming Week at Loyola. The Lions feature running back Jeremy Jefferson, who is about to become the career rushing leader in Shreveport-Bossier history. The following week (Oct. 6), Loyola will play host to Parkway in battle of two teams whose stadiums are near the banks of the Red River. That night, there will be a 30th anniversary reunion of the 1976 state championship team.

Pre-game ceremonies last week were phenomenal as Loyola honored National POW/MIA Day with special ceremonies in conjunction with Barksdale AFB. The highlight was a fly-over by two A-10s, piloted by Loyola parents Brady Glick and J.R. Russell, that left the crowd in awe.

If you get a chance, come support the Flyers tonight or at an upcoming game!

BBQ celebrates 80th year

The 80th annual Booster Club Barbecue will be held at 6 p.m. on Oct. 18 at Riverview Hall (the "old" Shreveport Convention Center). Tickets have been mailed, but can also be purchased at the Loyola Alumni Office for $25. This is no longer a "stag" event; it is open to all alumni, parents and friends of Loyola.

This year's event will also feature a few special live auction items. Steaks will be served from 6-8 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit the Alumni Scholarship program, which provides tuition assistance for children and grandchildren of alumni.

This event, which was begun by Tim Moran, is unlike any other in the area and brought together hundreds of alumni and friends of Loyola College Prep.

Lunch with Loyola begins again on Sept. 27

The first "Lunch with Loyola" for the 2006-07 school year will be held Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Country Tavern in Shreveport on Brook Hollow Dr. (behind the Auto Mall). The event begins at 11:30 a.m.

There is a variety of menu items and the price is between $12 and $16 and is all inclusive (beverage, tax & tip). The main purpose of the event is simply to get local alumni and friends of the school together. Come to renew old acquaintances, hear about what's going on at Loyola these days and discuss any other items that might be of interest.

Call 226-6291 to RSVP or for more information.

Faculty keeping alumni tradition alive

One of the great traditions of Loyola is the number of alumni who are on the staff. This year, there are 12 graduates of Jesuit/St. Vincent's who are part of the faculty and staff.

Alumni First Person: Cheryl Stringer '96

I wanted to update you on my re-location back to Shreveport and my new business venture.  I decided that I was not living up to my creative talents as a customer service senior manager at Continental Airlines.  After eight years of working there starting out as a baggage handler working my way through college, the events and aftermath of 9/11, I felt it was time for a change.  What better place to start that change than at the beginning of where it all began -- Shreveport, my Hometown.  Family is very important to me so I decided to approach a business that I could share with my family in a day to day basis.  Both of my parents are now retired and I wanted to center my business around something we all could do as a group.

I decided to open a flower shop.  I am the proud owner of the first black, now first black woman owned florist in Shreveport.  I run the shop on a daily basis as a family operation. My, mother, a retired nurse of 20years, has obtained her license in floral retail and artistry of creative designs.  My father now that he is retired, 34 years as a coach and public school teacher is our vice-president of operations.  We are a full fresh flower florist, many gift ideas, day to day arrangements and a known icon in funeral flowers and final arrangements for flowers. We offer worldwide delivery through FTD and we can be found online through our website at www.hayesandstringerflorist.com.  You can place your order on-line 24/7 or call us during business hours posted on the web.

I often wondered as I used to dream up ideas in my head in the halls of LCP what would I be doing someday.  Now at age 28... well I think I've found my place.  Right here with my flyer friends, family, and flower shop business.  Thanks, LCP, for your strong support those last four years there to make me the strong, impressionable, young woman that I have become.
