John A. Brocato Keith Evans

Brocato, Evans chosen for Hall of Honor

The St. John’s-Jesuit-Loyola Alumni Association will inducted two new members into the school's Hall of Honor on Nov. 3 during ceremonies at halftime of the Loyola-North Caddo game at Messmer Stadium.

John A. Brocato ‘39 and Keith Evans (Honorary Alumnus) are this year’s inductees into the Hall of Honor. With this year’s class, the Hall of Honor now has 52 members.

John A. Brocato, Class of 1939, was dedicated in sharing his talents as a coach and mentor to young athletes in the Shreveport community. A veteran of World War II, he returned to Shreveport and St. John’s in 1946, became the Flyers first head coach after the sport was suspended due to World War II. For many years, he served as a volunteer assistant for high school and junior school teams and cared deeply about the school. He passed away suddenly in 1961.

Keith Evans served as Chairman of the school’s Board of Trustees from 2003-05 and was one of the driving forces behind the construction and improvement of the Loyola Athletic Complex. He has also served on numerous committees for Loyola and he and his wife Karen have had three children at Loyola. He has been a member of St. Joseph Church for 25 years and received the Diocesan Medal of Honor in 2001. Keith is the Chairman of the Board and President of Brammer Engineering Inc. and has been at BEI since 1982. A native of Houston, he received his B.S. degree in Petroleum Engineering from Louisiana State University in 1980 and is a registered Professional Engineer in Louisiana and Texas.

Weiss named state's Math Teacher of the Year

The secret -- if it ever was one -- is out now. The rest of the state has found out what Loyola College Prep has already known. When it comes to teaching math, Vona Weiss is as good as it gets.

She has been named as the 2006 Outstanding High School Teacher of Mathematics for the State of Louisiana. It was presented by the Louisiana Association of Teacher's of Mathematics, which is the state division of NCTM (National Council of Teacher's of Mathematics) and comprises all teachers (public and private) from K-through-college.

“I was SO excited to win this award,” she said. “I really feel this is an award for all of us at Loyola. It is easy to teach when you have such wonderful students.”

"Vona Weiss possesses the truly rare blend of being both an inspired educator and a true motivator,” Loyola Principal Frank Israel said. “She makes math come alive for students and inspires them to find hidden talents within themselves. Vona inspires other faculty members and students by her energetic love of learning."

Weiss is in her fourth school year at Loyola and currently teaches AB and BC Calculus.

Relief fund established for Curtis Harris

A fund for contributions has been set up at Louisiana Catholic Federal Credit Union in Shreveport for Curtis Harris, whose house was destroyed by fire two weeks ago. Graduates during the last 20 years remember Curtis as Loyola's beloved maintenance supervisor until his retirement in 2003. Curtis was also inducted into the school's hall of Honor in 2004.

Curtis and his wife have found a place to live, but lost everything else in the fire. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated and will be used to help provide relief for him and his wife.  For more information regarding making a donation, contact Louisiana Catholic FCU (648 East Kings Hwy.) at 219-8450.

Sports: Flyers close regular season Friday

The stingy Flyer defense against Lakeside: Morgan Brian (12), Sean Doolin (middle) and Tripp George (2).

Coming off a big win over Lakeside, the Loyola Flyers will play their final regular season game Friday at home against North Caddo.

The Flyers beat Lakeside 31-12 last week as they rushed for more than 400 yards, led by junior running back Morgan Johnston who had 202. It was the first 400-yard rushing game for the Flyers since 1967.

Tripp George, a returning All-State linebacker, had 13 tackles and has led the Flyers in tackles in all but one game this year.

After suffering two last-second losses to district rivals Springhill and Homer, the win raised Loyola's record to 2-7 and the Flyers still have an outside chance of making the playoffs with a win over the Rebels Friday.

VOLLEYBALL: The Loyola volleyball team is headed for the another playoff berth after finishing tied for second place in the district.

They will travel to Scotlandville (27-9 overall, 9-3 in district) to play in the first round. The game will be Monday at 4 p.m.

The Flyers are seeded No. 28 and Scotlandville is the No. 5 seed. The Flyers finished 10-17 in the regular season overall and 5-3 in the district.
