"One Thousand Flyers Strong"

The concept behind this year's Alumni Annual Fund Drive is simple -- the support of more than 1,000 alumni. A big task, to be sure -- it's more than double the typical participation amount -- but it can be done. But only with your support. In fact, we could reach that goal just by the support of those who read the E-Flyer (now numbering more than 1,100).

Pledge cards were mailed this week and we hope you'll take a moment to consider your gift to Loyola for 2006-07. This appeal is being made at this time of year because many would like to make a year-end gift for 2006 tax purposes. However, it may be more convenient for you to make a gift/pledge in January. Please return the enclosed contribution form at your earliest convenience.

You might choose the convenience of our updated online donation page, for those who choose to make a credit card donation (this is a secure site). CLICK HERE FOR DONATION PAGE

We can only become "One Thousand Flyers Strong" with your support!

Carmody wins Lou Groza Award

Loyola product Art Carmody '003, now at the University of Louisville, captured the 2006 Lou Groza Award, which is presented to the nation's top placekicker.

The award was announced during Thursday night's 2006 Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Orlando.

Carmody made 20-of-23 field goal attempts and all 57 of his extra point tries this season for the Cardinals.

In 2004, he broke the single-season NCAA record for consecutive extra points with 77. That season, he was ranked second in the country in scoring by kickers.

At Loyola, he made 18 field goals and 64 extra points during his career from 1999-2002 and ranks No. 2 on the school's kick-scoring list. He was an All-State selection in 2002 and also made All-State as a pitcher in baseball.

John Vaughn of Auburn University and Garrett Hartley of Oklahoma University were the other finalists.

Up next, the Big East champion and No. 5 ranked Cards will meet ACC champion and 15th-ranked Wake Forest in the FedEx Orange Bowl on Jan. 2, 2007 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Fla.

FAiTH provides for 500 families

On Dec. 4, Loyola College Prep held its annual FAiTH Day as students fed 500 families a Christmas meal. Since the days of the Jesuit order running the school, the students on Jordan Street have fed the hungry at Christmas.

Since 1990, the name of the group that spearheads the undertaking is called FAiTH – Flyers Aiding the Hungry. The FAiTH officers converted the gym into Santa’s Food Giveaway, complete with Snoopy's Toy Shack. From 3-4:30 p.m., the baskets were given out to the needy (The list is supplied by the St. Vincent DePaul Society).

Chairmen of the event were Wesley Howell (son of Thomas Howell '79), Camille Sample and Bridget Watts (Michael Watts '77).

Among those students participating in the event were senior Lauren Vines (top left), senior Spencer Lamb ("Santa Claus") and sophomore J.P. McPhillips.

On Nov. 25, dedication ceremonies were held for Loyola's new Hundley Field House at the Athletic Complex. The 10,000 square-foot facility has been named in honor of Harland & Jean Hundley, longtime supporters of the school.

Family and friends from all over the country --- and even from a foreign country -- attended to honor the Hundleys.

Speakers included Loyola Principal Frank Israel, Athletic Director and Head Football Coach John LeBlanc '84 and family friend Jerry Montgomery.

Mrs. Jean Hundley spoke on behalf of the Hundley family.

Rev. Peter Mangum '82 and Rev. Karl Daigle '89 led in opening and closing prayer and the blessing of the facility.

An Open House for the Hundley Field House will be held in the upcoming months. The facility has locker rooms for all boys and girls sports that play at the Athletic Complex and will feature a weight room for all Flyer athletes.
