Alumni Update
DON BAKER '63
has recently been relieved to learn that the University of British Columbia,
where he has been teaching Korean history and religion since 1987, has
eliminated mandatory retirement, the last major university in North America
to do so. That means he can keep teaching in Vancouver for another decade or
so. (Since he teaches history, he doesn't have to worry about updating his
lecture notes!) He is always glad to welcome friends from Shreveport to his
adopted Canadian home and loves introducing them to the beautiful scenery
and culinary pleasures of Vancouver (though, be warned, during the winter
Olympics in 2010, there will be no spare bedrooms in his home).
SARAH
WILLIAMSON
'98 has recently
accepted a position as the Assistant Director of Greek Life at Texas
Christian University and will begin in June. For the last three years, she
has served as the Coordinator of Greek Life at the University of North
Alabama.

graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He married Sherlee Bacon and

JOHN ROBERT
"JACK" MARTZELL '54 passed away on May 23, 2007 in New Orleans at
the age of 70. He was a founding partner with Martzell & Bickford in New
Orleans as a trial lawyer practicing in the areas of civil and criminal
litigation. He received a bachelors degree from the University of Notre Dame
and his law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1961,
where he served as a law review editor. From 1966 to 1972, he served as
director of the Louisiana Commission on Human Relations, Rights and
Responsibilities and was special counsel to Governor John W. McKeithen.
Mr. Martzell also served various government bodies as special counsel,
including the New Orleans City Council during its 1986 special investigation
into sales tax collections. Mr. Martzell was also been active in various
professional organizations. From 1982 to 1984, he served as Chairman of the
Department of Public Affairs of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.
He was a past president of the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association and has
served on its Board of Governors. Mr. Martzell was a lecturer at Louisiana
State University Law School, Tulane Law School, and Notre Dame Law School.
ROBERT E. "BO"
BOVENZI '66 passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday,
April 19, 2007. Robert was born on September 20, 1948 in Munich, Germany to
Lieutenant James J. Bovenzi, Jr. and Mary G. Bovenzi. Robert's athleticism
and affinity for action was apparent from a very early age. At Jesuit High
School in Shreveport, he distinguished himself as an athlete. His toughness
earned him a football scholarship to Northwestern State University. At
Northwestern, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. At the time of his
death, Bo was employed at LSU-HSC in accounting services. Bo was known as a
great friend to all. A man of few words, friends, co-workers and family
enjoyed his far-fetched dry wit and his ability to poke fun at life. His
humility combined with a passion to compete made him the ultimate teammate
in athletics and work. The family requests
that memorials be made to the Loyola College Prep, Michael Bovenzi
Scholarship Fund.
