Bass Tourney set for Sept. 1

Big cash prizes are up for grabs as the second annual Loyola Bass Tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 1 on the Red River. There will be two divisions -- Alumni/Parent and Open -- and the event will begin at 6:30 a.m. with the weigh-in and Clark's Marina at 1 p.m.

There's a first place guarantee of $1,500 for the winning boat in the Alumni/Parent division. There's also $2,500 guaranteed prize in the Open Division.

The cost is $150 per boat for each two-man team. Each participant in the Alumni/Parent Division must be an alumni or a parent. Single entrants are allowed, but you must pay the full entry fee.

100th Year of Flyer Football to be celebrated

The 2007-08 school year will mark the 100th year of Flyer football. There will be a celebration to honor and recognize former football on Sept. 21 when the Flyers take on Homer at Messmer Stadium. There will be a special gathering of all former players, managers and coaches with a ceremony to be held at the game.

The 40th anniversary of the 1967 state championship team will also be recognized that night.

Class of '77 holds 30th Reunion

The Jesuit and St. Vincent Class of 1977 held their 30th Reunion on Aug. 3-4 and there were 32 Jesuit grads and 28 SVA graduates with a total of 90 folks Saturday night.

Thanks also to Vincent and Mimi Glorioso for opening up their home Friday night and to Bernadette Boyd for a Saturday afternoon gathering.

Saturday night's festivities were held at Pierremont Oaks and the picture was taken before Rick Fleming and Paul Cordaro arrived.

Among the former teachers who made an appearance were David DeFatta, Diana Ely, Ken Lerchie.

Mike Tanner (Washington D.C.) and Grey Miller (Florida) were recognized for traveling the greatest distance to attend the festivities.

Sunday's Mass at St. John's was also well attended.

New school year begins at Loyola

The 106th school year of Loyola College Prep has begun as new students reported on Aug. 13 and the first full day for all students was on Aug. 14.

There are five new members of the faculty -- Mikki Sciba (freshman theology), Mary Cacioppo (sophomore honors English), Stephanie Smith (sophomore English), Ashleigh Chavis (chemistry) and Steven Geter (physical education).

This year, there are 114 freshman enrolled, marking one of the largest in school history.


Alumni Update

DANIEL McNICOLL '74 lives in Alexandria, VA and works as an administrator with the National Headquarters of the Salvation Army. He was heavily involved in the Katrina relief effort and still visits Louisiana several times a year. "I get together with other Louisiana ex-patriots to watch LSU games. There are quite a few LSU bars in the D.C. area."

MARK NOWERY '74 recently retired after spending almost 28 years as an automotive engineer at Ford Motor Company. He lives in Dearborn, Mich..

JAMES B. GIDDENS '82 is moving from San Diego, CA to San Antonio, TX to begin work as an officer in the US Army at Ft. Sam Houston.  In San Diego he worked as a minister with the Presbytery of San Diego, administering their largest urban mission.  He also spent one year in Kuwait and Iraq as a chaplain with the Army Reserves.  James has been married to his wife Claudia for 15 years and together they have two sons, Ethan (6 years) and James Oliver (5 months).

THOMAS VAN HOOK '84 graduated June 2007 from Keller University with a Master of Information Systems Management with a concentration in Information Security.

ANTHONY CARMODY '85 and wife Katherine welcomed their twins Frederick Miller and Lily Grace, who were born June 27, 2007. Frederick weighed 5.5 lbs and was 18 inches long and Lily Grace 5.2 lbs and 19 inches long.

MARTY COOK '88 and wife Jennifer bounced a girl, Jillian Jenna, into the world June 5, 2007. He is a sportswriter for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in Fayetteville.

KARL DAIGLE '89 celebrated his tenth anniversary as a Catholic priest on May 31, 2007. Fr. Karl is the Pastor of St. Joseph Church and School in Shreveport, LA.

KENDALL ELROD DAIGLE '89 and husband Paul welcomed their second baby girl, Haven Camille, born July 24 in Baton Rouge. Haven is preceded by big sister and "Katrina baby," Quinlan, born August 29, 2005. All live in Baton Rouge.

CHRIS M. CAPLIS '92 currently lives in Denver and is a senior drilling engineer for Antero resources. He is married to Ashley Beth Hulse and they have a one-year-old daughter, Shelby.

ALICE HART SAMPLE '92 and her husband Knighton celebrated the birth of Caroline Colby Sample was born April 9, 2007.

MICHAELANN '94 & BRAD '95 NICHOLS welcomed daughter, Mary-Allen Elizabeth, on May 4, 2007. Tyler (2 1/2) is the proud big brother.

P.J. PATTON '95 has lived in Jackson Hole, WY for about 8 years. She has recently started a non-profit company called Pursue Balance (pursuebalance.org). She loves living and playing in and around Jackson, particularly enjoying mountain biking, rock climbing, cross country snow skiing, swimming and running.

JOHN WALKER '96 went on to graduate from from LSU in 2000.  Following graduation in 2000, he served in the United States Air Force.  In 2005 he left active duty to attend law school at LSU.  In July of 2006 he was married to Jessica Walker and will graduate law school in May of 2008. He intends to pursue a career in commercial development.

JACOB PATTON '98 and his bride of 2 years have just recently moved into their new home in north Shreveport. Jake works for Dixie Weld-Fab in Dixie, LA as a welder and his wife, April, has just started her third year of medical school at LSUMC in Shreveport. They are expecting their first baby, a boy, Hayden Michael, at the end of July of this year.

MITCHELL HARMON '002 graduated from LSUS with a degree in Psychology in May 2006.  He recently got married (March 10th) and bought a home in South Highlands.  He is working as a Disability Analyst for the Social Security Administration.

Memorials

THEOPHILE N. SCOTT, former football coach for St. John's, passed away on June 17 in Shreveport at the age of 87. He was born May 23, 1920 and lived most of his life in Natchitoches. A graduate from St. Mary's Academy in 1938, Northwestern State University in 1943, and received his masters degree from University of Arkansas. He was a corporal in US Marines and participated in the Phillipine Campaign. Coach Scott was a former coach, teacher, and director of student activities. He was the athletic coach at St. John's High School (now Loyola) from 1947-49; later teaching at Woodlawn High School; worked as a Guidance Counsellor at St. Mary's School. He retired from Louisiana and Texas Public School Systems. His greatest accomplishments occurred during his football career, named to the St. Mary's School Hall of Fame, named Captain of the 1942 NSU Championship Team, and was an All Conference Halfback and Safety in 1941. At one time, he held several team records in football, one for over 38 years. Inducted into the NSU Graduates Club Hall of Fame in 1984 and nominated recently as one of the top 100 football players at NSU. Mr. Scott was past president of Natchitoches Genealogical and Historical Association and King of Krewe of Elders 2007 in Shreveport.
 

LT. COL. JOHN "JACK" APPLEBY '53, U.S. Army Ret. passed away on June 18, 2007 in St. Louis, MO. He is survived by  Joanne Appleby (nee Jackson), sons Scott '74, Tim '77, Kevin Appleby, daughters Julie Mersch, Amy Hubbard and Angie  Purcell; grandfather of 19; brother of Jim Appleby '53 and Jane Schroeder. Lt. Col. Appleby served in the U.S. Army for over 27 years.

 

CHRIS HEWITT ’73 died June 3, 2007, at his home in Aurora, CO, of cancer. He was a brilliant musician and composer  and worked as a composer for a number of networks, including Animal Planet, Food Network, and HGTV. He is survived by his wife Jeanie; his sons Michael and David and daughter Jarra; his father; and his three brothers and their families.
