Calling all alumni in the
Baton Rouge/New Orleans area: The Flyers are headed your way.
You're invited to be join
with the Flyer fans making their way from Shreveport on Friday for the
Class 2A playoffs.
The Loyola football team will

first round game to be played at Plaquemine High School.
The Flyers, who won three
of the last four games, are 6-4 overall and seeded No. 24. St. John is 8-2
and seeded No. 9.
There are seven Flyers on
the '07 roster who are the children of alumni: seniors Aubry Carmody

Loyola closed the regular

last 17 years the Flyers have reached the playoffs.
On offense, quarterback

Whitten has 74 tackles.
In other Flyer athletic news, the volleyball team completed an
undefeated district season (9-0) and a district championship before being
eliminated by McGehee (New Orleans) in the playoffs. Also, the cross
country team won both the boys' and girls' team titles at the district
meet and will run in the state meet in Natchitoches next week.
Touchstone,
Haynie inducted into Hall

Jack
Touchstone ’70 and Dr. William Haynie, Sr. were inducted into the Flyer
Alumni Association’s Hall of Honor during halftime ceremonies of the
Loyola-Red River football game at Messmer Stadium. The criteria for Hall
of Honor are based on service to school, religion and community. Selection
is done by the Alumni Association and previous Hall of Honor inductees.
With this year’s class, the Hall of Honor now has 54 members.
Touchstone, a member of the Class of 1970, served as president of the
school’s Board of Trustees from 1997-1999. He is the founding president of
Shreveport Little League and has served on the boards of the Feist-Weiller
Cancer Center, Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club and O’Brien Energy Company. He
is a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. He is currently in
the oil and gas investment business after serving as manufacturer’s
representative for Eastland Shoe Company for 20 years. His two children
are Loyola graduates.
Dr. Haynie is this year’s Honorary Alumnus. He recently retired from the
practice of pediatrics after 50 years and delivered more than 20,000
newborns during his career. He was the founder of Mid-City Pediatrics in
1981 and also served as Chief of Staff at CHRISTUS Schumpert Medical
Center. He was placed on the Shreveport Kiwanis “Tablet of Honor” for
service to children in the Shreveport area. He received the Distinguished
Physician Award from the Shreveport Medical Society in May, 2006, for
“outstanding contributions to the advancement of medicine in Shreveport.”
But Dr. Haynie considers his greatest thrill to be his marriage to his
wife June and their raising of six children. Their four sons are graduates
of Jesuit and all four currently practice medicine in Shreveport. Dr.
Haynie is known as “Papa” to his 22 grandchildren – 11 of whom are Loyola
graduates or current students.
81st BBQ is a tremendous
success
If there were ever any doubt that the Loyola BBQ is the place to be on a
Wednesday night in late October, those doubts were erased as the Alumni
Association presented the 81st annual event.
The current Shreveport mayor was there. The
previous mayor was there. Two political candidates were there. A Division
I college basketball coach was there. Three local judges were there. High
school coaches from schools throughout Northwest Louisiana were there.
And, of
course, there were lots of people from the Loyola community -- alumni,
parents and friends -- as well. Lots and lots of Loyola people.
More than
600 steaks were cooked to the gathering at Riverview Hall as one of the
best crowds in years made its way to the annual event. Thanks to T.J.
Mandina (event coordinator), Chuck Sicard (BBQ chairman), Dudley Lang
(cook), Robert Pringle (Alumni Association president) and the many
volunteers who made the event so successful.

Loyola active in
CyberCommand
Many of you have heard of the move of Air Force's CyberCommand Center to
Barksdale AFB. Construction of a Cyber Innovation
Center (CIC), which would serve as the civilian counterpart to the
AFCC, is scheduled to begin soon. The CIC will be built on a 58-acre site,
near Barksdale. Bossier City has allotted $50 million for the
construction, while the state of Louisiana has approved another $50
million.
From the
beginning, Loyola has been active in being on the forefront of this
exciting development. According to Principal Frank Israel, "Loyola's role
in CyberCommand continues to unfold and grow each day. The local community
is VERY excited about the potential for educational and economic growth
presented by this arrival."
Among the initiatives Loyola has taken are:
1. Joined the CyberCommand Consortium to engage in conversation and
planning for all facets of both private and public involvement in this
move.
2. Submitted and received an AFCEA grant for science teaching involving
the cyber domain.
3. Scheduled meetings with administrative people from a Catholic school in
Rome, NY who have linked up with a military information systems unit at a
base in their community.
4. Increased efforts at tech training for all of our faculty. (I just came
from a very intense five hour meeting about tech use in classrooms.) We
are working toward 100% of our teachers having full-time use of an LCD
projector and either a Smartboard or a tablet PC, at their choosing.
5. Have scheduled to be part of a Cyber Symposium to be held here at the
convention center in late November. Both kids and faculty will attend.
6. Have rewired all school buildings with Cat 5 wiring and business class
wireless service. Additionally, all student computers (as of three weeks
from today) will be no more than 18 months old, with over half being less
than six months old.
7. Are currently looking at curricular additions for 08-09 school year to
include more "high brow" computer software and/or hardware classes---this
one is the subject of much discussion.
8. Have begun use of video conferencing to aid in short-term homebound
instruction.
9. Are looking into video conferencing to share class offerings with other
high schools and universities.
These items are being paid for by Parents' Association proceeds, funds
from the Tobacco Settlement Lawsuit, and gifts from donors.
