Alumni Annual Fund continues

The good news: It's another successful year in terms on money raised from the Alumni Annual Fund Drive. The goal was set at $65,000 and our alumni have donated $65,143 (through April 15).

The bad news: The participation rate is only 9.1 percent. It is our hope to try for 20 participants in each class from 1960-1999 and 10 in each class from the 1950s and 2000. (By the way, thanks to those from the pre-1950 period, who have had 23 participants in the Annual Fund Drive, led by the Class of 1949 with seven donors).

The good news, Part 2: If you would like to increase the numbers from your graduating class, you can still do so. If you still have your pledge card, you fill it out and return it to 921 Jordan St., Shreveport LA, 71101. (If you need another, please let us know by return email.)

Or if you'd like to make an online donation, you can do so by using our secure link: [DONATION PAGE]

The list below is a class-by-class breakdown of those donations received through April 15, 2008.

Baseball celebrates Centennial Season

Seven different decades were represented on April 5 when Loyola hosted the Centennial Baseball Celebration at Cicero Field. More than 30 former players were on hand and were recognized between games of a double-header between the Flyers and North DeSoto.

Flyer baseball was first mention in the 1907-08 school catalogue. The school has won two state championships, produced four state finalists and won 19 district championships. Loyola has a current streak of 14 consecutive playoff appearances.

Former Coach Frank Cicero, who won 270 games in 27 seasons, threw out the first pitch before the second game of the doubleheader. Bobby Gilliam '99 is the current coach of the Flyers, marking the 24th time in the last 26 years that Loyola has been coached by a Flyer graduate.

Remembering Martha Calantone ...

She never taught a class and never coached a game. But Martha Calantone is remembered by thousands of Flyer alumni from the 1960s, '70s and '80s as a treasured part of their lives on Jordan Street.

Mrs. Calantone, 87, passed away at Springlake Guest Care on February 9 after a brief illness. Mrs. Calantone was born February 25, 1920, in Milwaukee and was a resident of Shreveport for 61 years.

She was a founding member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a member of St. Joseph Guild.

Besides her love for Jesus, her church and her family, Martha was most happy when she was employed by Jesuit High School as the dietician until her retirement in 1986. She enjoyed cooking and serving for "her boys" and was widely known for her rolls. Anyone who knew Martha knew she loved to cook for people.

Billy Thomas receives Sportsmanship Award

Former Loyola star Billy Thomas '94, who now plays in the NBA Developmental league for Colorado, has been named the recipient of the 2007-08 Jason Collier Sportsmanship Award, as voted by the NBA Development League head coaches. The award honors the player who best represents the ideals of character and conduct on and off the court. Thomas also earned the award in 2002-03.

Thomas has enjoyed success on the hardwood as well. A 2008 D-League All-Star, has played in 34 games for the 14ers where he is averaging 16.4 points, 3.9 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 37.3 minutes.

Thomas has played in 10 NBA games this season (four with New Jersey and six with Cleveland).

“It’s a credit to Billy and his sense of community and respect for the game that he receives this award,” said Joe Wolf, Colorado general manager and head coach.

“This is the second time Billy has been voted by our coaches to receive this award,” said Chris Alpert, D-League’s Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel. “He is not only a tremendous basketball player (as evidenced by his two call-ups this season, one to the New Jersey Nets and one to the Cleveland Cavaliers), but he is also a terrific ambassador of the game who has tremendous respect for the game, his teammates, referees, and opponents.”

Sports Update: Winborne tops in Class 2A

Add another honor to the impressive resume of Loyola junior Charles Winborne. Already the school record holder for points in a season and in a career, Winborne was named as the Class 2A Outstanding Player on the All-State boys basketball team for 2007-08.

Winborne, who has started for the Flyers since his freshman season, led Loyola to a 20-16 record this year and the regional round of the playoffs. Through his first three seasons, he has scored 2,250 points and has the top two point totals for a season (934 this season and 816 a year ago). He also holds the school record for points in a game with 47.

SOFTBALL: The Flyers reach the post-season playoffs with a 10-15 record and lost in the opening round to DeQuincy, 5-2. During the season, a fund-raising drive resulted in lights for St. Vincent's Field. The lights came on for the first time on April 2 as the Flyers defeated Homer 12-6.

BASEBALL: Returning All-Stater Morgan Brian broke the career home run record and now has 17. The long ball has been on display for this year's team as the Flyers have hit 25 this season. Loyola is 18-14 overall and expected to make the playoffs for the 15th straight year under first-year coach Bobby Gilliam '99.
