Bustillo, Hodges named to Hall Two longtime supporters of Loyola College Prep will be inducted as the newest members into the Flyer Alumni Association's Hall of Honor in ceremonies this week.
James Bustillo '64 and W.L. "Lamar" Hodges will be honored at a Thursday night banquet at East Ridge Country Club and the induction ceremony will take place Friday at halftime of Loyola's football game against Parkway at Messmer Stadium. The criteria for Hall of Honor are based on service to school, religion and community. Selection is done by the Alumni Association and previous Hall of Honor inductees. With this year's class, the Hall of Honor now has 63 members. James Bustillo is the Regional Director of Marketing at Blue Cross & Blue Shield and has been a 40-year employee after graduating from Centenary College. He is a Certified Life Underwriter and a Chartered Financial Consultant. He has widespread civic and community service, including past chairman of the Downtown YMCA Board as well as serving on committees with the Boy Scouts of America, Rotary and Lions Clubs, Junior Achievement of Northwest Louisiana, the Independence Bowl and as a Salvation Army volunteer. While at Jesuit (now Loyola), he was an All-State outfielder on the 1964 state championship baseball team and was a three-year member of the varsity football team, including the school's first district championship team in 1961. His son, Jason, is a 1990 graduate of the school. He is a member of St. John Berchmans. Lamar Hodges, this year's Honorary Alumnus, has been a supporter of Loyola in many capacities. A 1965 graduate of Byrd High, he received his degree in geology from Louisiana Tech and has spent more than 35 years as an independent geologist in Shreveport. He served on the Board of Trustees during Loyola's crucial period of changing to a co-ed school. He worked as co-chairman of the annual BBQ for more than 10 years. For more than 25 years, he has also made a significant impact in providing assistance to students as well as serving on a number of school-related committees. Two of his sons are Loyola graduates (Will '87 and Jim '91). Tickets for the Hall of Honor banquet are available by calling (318) 226-6291.
Wednesday's Open House to showcase gymnasium The Loyola community will get a first-hand look at the renovation of the school's gynmasium at Wednesday's Open House from 5-6 p.m. As part of Phase I of the Loyola Forever Campaign, the gym -- which is the oldest high school facility in Shreveport (built in 1951) -- underwent a summer renovation that includes new lights, floor, PA system, bleachers, improved heating and air conditioning as well as six new fiberglass backboards. There is ongoing work being done to the foyer and P.E. dressing areas. The first athletic event in the renovated gym is a Tuesday volleyball game between the Flyers and Mansfield. Look for further updates on other campaign and construction progress through the school website and the E-Flyer.
