SwimmingFlyers win three state titles
Two Flyers each won two events and the Loyola girls finished fourth in the state to highlight an amazing performance by the Flyer swim team at the Class 3A state meet in Sulphur.
Junior Chelsea Russell and sophomore Danielle Albert each won two events and Megan Thurman finished second in another to give the Flyers three All-State performers in the meet.
Also, the team of Russell, Albert, Justine Russell and Olivia Moore won the 400 freestyle relay.
Loyola's fourth-place finish is the highest in school history in a sport long dominated by South Louisiana schools. E.D. White (Thibodaux) finished first, followed by Parkview Baptist (Baton Rouge) and Sacred Heart Academy (New Orleans).
The Flyers finished with 216 points, more than 100 points ahead of fifth place Ben Franklin (New Orleans). A year ago in the Class 2A meet, the Loyola girls team finished seventh.
Russell, who was a state champion a year ago, won the 200 IM with a time of 2:19.97 and won by almost 12 seconds. Russell also won the 100 butterfly (1:02.19).
Albert also dominated her competition, winning by 12 seconds in the 200 freestyle and by 17 seconds in the 500 freestyle.
The 400 freestyle relay team won in a time of 4:06.89 in beating Parkview and E.D. White.
Thurman and Moore gave the Flyers a 2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke. Thurman was also sixth in the 60 freestyle.
Other top finishes for the Flyers were Holly Thurman (eighth in the 50 free), Justine Russell (eighth in the 100 backstroke), Moore (sixth in the 100 butterfly).
The boys team also had two participants as freshman Kolby Ledbetter placed sixth in the 100 backstroke consolations and eighth in the 100 breaststroke consolations and Jordan Wellborn was fifth in both the 100 breaststroke consolations and 200 free consolations.
The boys team finished in 15th place with 11 points.
