Chapter 1 – How Communication Affects Your Life

 

Communication – The process of sending and receiving messages to achieve understanding.

 

            Nonverbal Communication – Communication without the use of words

 

Verbal Communication – (Speaking, Writing) – Communication of or by means of words.

 

Speech Communication – The transmission of ideas by words using voices.

 

Intrapersonal Communication – An inward talking to oneself.

 

Interpersonal Communication – Transmission of messages between two or more people.

 

Types of Interpersonal Communication

1.       One-To-One Communication – Speaking with only one other person.

(Examples – Face-to-Face Conversations, Telephone Conversations, Interviews)

2.       Group Discussion – Discussion between three or more people with a common purpose.

3.       Debate – A reasoned argument between two parties.

4.       Parliamentary Procedure – A set of rules used to conduct a meeting in an orderly manner;  the established rules of order for conducting group meetings.

5.       Public Communication – Interpersonal communication in which one or more people communicate with an audience.

6.       Public Speaking – Communicating ideas verbally to an audience.

7.       Oral Interpretation of Literature – The process by which a speaker performs literature aloud for an audience.

8.       Drama – Public communication which uses both language and actions to tell a story of human conflict.

9.       Mass Communication – One person or perhaps several senders communicate with a large number of listeners.  (Examples – Newspaper, Television, Radio) – The receiver can “Turn Off” the sender at will.

1.       Must be sincere

2.       Must speak knowledgeably – Must know what you are talking about

6.       Must make good use of nonverbal communication.

8.       Confidence
