Strong showing for Flyers at state meet

Loyola's Robert Looney won a pair of events at the state swim meet in Sulphur. Looney and Darin Smith led Loyola to a 10th-place finish in the boys competition. The Loyola girls, led by Megan Thurman, finished seventh.

Looney won the Division IV boys 200 IM (1:57.28) and the 500 free (4:29.61). Smith finished second in the 500 free (4:49.85) and the 100 backstroke (56.23)

Thurman finished third in the girls 200 IM and the 100 backstroke. Loyola also finished third in the girls 200 medley relay and fifth in the 400 free relay. Ann Rene Shores took seventh in the girls 400 breaststroke.

Congratulations to Loyola’s Robert Looney, who has signed a swimming scholarship with Auburn, the defending national champion. Looney has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 200 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 400 freestyle and 1,500 freestyle, and holds Louisiana records in the 800 freestyle and 400 individual medley.
